What a sitemap does
An XML sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to find. It doesn’t guarantee indexing, but it helps search engines discover new and updated pages, especially on new sites or sites with few internal links.
Sitemap rules
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| URLs per sitemap file | 50,000 |
| File size (uncompressed) | 50 MB |
| URLs | Full, absolute URLs on the same site |
| Encoding | UTF-8, with characters like & escaped |
Do changefreq and priority matter?
Google says it ignores <priority> and <changefreq>. It uses <lastmod> if the date is consistently accurate, so only update it when a page really changes.
After you create it
- Upload sitemap.xml to your site root.
- Add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt.
- Submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
