What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a Markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that gives large language models a concise guide to your site. It sits alongside robots.txt and sitemap.xml, but its job is different: instead of controlling crawling, it points AI tools to your most useful content.
The format
| Part | What it contains |
|---|---|
| # Title | The name of your site or project (required) |
| > Summary | A short blockquote describing the site |
| Details | Optional paragraphs with key facts |
| ## Sections | Lists of links: – [Title](URL): note |
| ## Optional | Links an AI tool can skip if it needs a shorter context |
How to use it
- Fill in the form and download the file.
- Upload it to the root folder of your website.
- Check it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
- Update it when you add or remove important pages.
Adoption is still voluntary and varies between AI providers, so treat llms.txt as a helpful extra, not a replacement for good SEO or robots.txt rules.
