What makes a good slug
- Short and descriptive: usually 3–6 words.
- Lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only.
- Includes the main keyword without stuffing.
- No dates unless the content really is tied to one.
Hyphens or underscores?
Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs, because underscores can join words together. Use hyphens unless your system requires otherwise.
Changing a slug
If a page is already live, changing its slug creates a new URL. Set up a 301 redirect from the old address so you keep visitors and search rankings.
