This checker measures your title tag and meta description in both characters and pixels, then shows a preview of how the result could look in Google. Titles over about 580 pixels and descriptions over about 920 pixels are likely to be cut off with an ellipsis.

How to use the checker

  1. Paste or type your title tag. The bar turns amber or red if it’s too short or likely to be cut off.
  2. Paste your meta description and check its bar.
  3. Add the page URL if you want the preview to show the breadcrumb trail.
  4. Edit until both show Good length, then copy them into your SEO plugin (in Rank Math, that’s the Edit snippet panel).

Why pixels matter more than characters

Google cuts titles by width, not by a character count. A title full of wide letters like W and M runs out of space sooner than one full of i and l. That’s why advice like “keep it under 60 characters” is only a rough guide.

The tool measures your text in Arial at the sizes Google uses on desktop (20px for titles and 14px for descriptions) and compares it with the commonly observed limits of about 580px and 920px. These limits aren’t published by Google and change from time to time, so leave a little room.

How to write a title and description that earn the click

Example: a bakery’s description reads “We are the best bakery. Visit our bakery for bakery products.” It repeats the keyword and gives a searcher no reason to click. A rewrite like “Sourdough and pastries baked fresh every morning in Aberdeen. Order by 8pm for next-day collection.” is about the same length but tells people what they get, where and when.

Worked example

Before: UTM Builder – Free UTM Builder Tool – UTM Link Generator – Campaign URL Builder (82 characters, cut off and repetitive).

After: Free UTM Campaign URL Builder for GA4 | Mujeeb Rehman (53 characters, about 540px). It leads with the keyword, says it’s free and names the platform people use it with.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal meta title length?

Aim for roughly 50 to 60 characters, but check the pixel width: under about 580px on desktop is usually safe.

What is the ideal meta description length?

Around 120 to 155 characters, or under about 920px on desktop. Mobile results often show a little more text over more lines.

Does meta description length affect rankings?

No. The description doesn’t affect rankings directly, but a clear one can improve how many people click your result.

Why did Google change my title?

Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords, duplicated across pages or don’t match the page. Using your H1 wording in the title makes rewrites less likely.

Is this tool free?

Yes. It’s free and runs entirely in your browser.
