How the Hijri calendar works
The Hijri calendar is lunar. Each month begins with the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year is about 354 or 355 days, around 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. That’s why Ramadan moves earlier each year. Year 1 AH began with the Prophet Muhammad’s migration (Hijra) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.
This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calculated calendar of Saudi Arabia. Many countries start Ramadan and Eid by local moon sighting, so the actual day may differ by one or two days.
