Encode text so it’s safe to use in a URL, or decode a percent-encoded URL back into readable text.

Common encodings
| Character | Encoded |
|---|---|
| Space | %20 (or + in forms) |
| & | %26 |
| = | %3D |
| ? | %3F |
| / | %2F |
| £ | %C2%A3 |
| é | %C3%A9 |
Which mode to use
- Encode a value: for one piece of a URL, like a search term or parameter value. Encodes &, =, ?, / and spaces so they don’t break the URL.
- Encode a full URL: for a whole address with spaces or accents. Keeps :, /, ? and & so the URL still works.
- Decode: turns %XX sequences (and + signs) back into readable text.
When you decode a full URL, the tool also lists its parts and each query parameter, which is handy for checking tracking links.
Frequently asked questions
What is URL encoding?
Replacing characters that aren’t allowed in URLs with % and their hex code, also called percent-encoding.
Why does a space become %20?
Spaces aren’t allowed in URLs, so they’re encoded. Forms often use + instead.
What's the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?
encodeURI keeps URL structure characters; encodeURIComponent encodes them too, for single values.
Is my text uploaded?
No, it’s processed in your browser.
