Shopify plans and payment fees
| Plan | US price (yearly / monthly) | US online card rate | UK price (yearly / monthly) | UK online card rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29 / $39 | 2.9% + 30¢ | £19 / £25 | 2.0% + 25p |
| Grow | $79 / $105 | 2.7% + 30¢ | £49 / £65 | 1.7% + 25p |
| Advanced | $299 / $399 | 2.5% + 30¢ | £259 / £344 | 1.5% + 25p |
If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a fee of 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow) or 0.6% (Advanced) on top of the provider’s own charges.
Worked example
A US store on Basic (yearly) sells a $45 product that costs $15, with $6 shipping and $8 of ads per order. The payment fee is $1.61 (2.9% + 30¢). With 200 orders a month, the $29 plan adds about $0.15 per order. Profit is about $14.25 per order, or $2,850 a month, a 31.7% net margin.
When to upgrade
On Grow, the US card rate drops by 0.2 points. That saves $0.09 per $45 order, so it would take over 500 orders a month to cover the higher plan price from card fees alone. Upgrade for features you need, not just the rate.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify take per sale?
With Shopify Payments, 2.9% + 30¢ on the US Basic plan, or 2.0% + 25p in the UK, plus your monthly plan.
What's a good profit margin for a Shopify store?
It varies widely; many stores aim for a net margin of 10% to 30% after ads. Ad costs are often the biggest variable.
Are there extra fees with PayPal or Stripe?
Yes. If you don’t use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra 0.6% to 2% depending on your plan.
Does this include apps and taxes?
No. Add app subscriptions to your costs, and remember sales tax or VAT collected isn’t profit.
