What schema markup does
Schema markup is code that tells search engines exactly what a page is about: a business, a product, an article, an event. It can make your page eligible for rich results, such as star ratings, prices or event dates in Google, and helps AI search tools understand and cite your content accurately.
Which type to use
| Type | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Organization | Your home or About page: name, logo, social profiles. |
| LocalBusiness | Shops, salons, clinics and trades with an address and opening hours. |
| Article | Blog posts and news, with author and publish date. |
| Product | Product pages with a price and availability. |
| Event | Concerts, classes and webinars with a date and place. |
Worked example: a product page
Choosing Product, entering the brand “Acme” and a price of 19.99 creates a Product with a nested Offer, price, currency and availability, the core properties Google looks for in merchant listings.
Rules to follow
- Only mark up content that’s visible on the page.
- Test the code with Google’s Rich Results Test before publishing.
- Don’t add fake reviews or ratings. It breaks Google’s guidelines and can lead to a manual action.
