How it’s calculated
- Coins bought = amount invested × (1 − buying fee) ÷ buy price.
- Sale value = coins × sell price × (1 − selling fee).
- Profit = sale value − amount invested.
- Break-even price = buy price ÷ ((1 − buying fee) × (1 − selling fee)).
With 0.5% fees each way, you need the price to rise by about 1% just to break even.
UK tax on crypto
| 2026-27 | |
|---|---|
| Annual exempt amount | £3,000 |
| Basic rate taxpayers | 18% |
| Higher and additional rate | 24% |
HMRC treats most crypto disposals (selling, swapping for another coin, or spending) as subject to Capital Gains Tax. If you bought coins at different times, HMRC’s pooling rules set the cost, so your real gain may differ. Losses can be reported to reduce other gains.
