Common conversion formulas
| Formula | Used by | 8.2 CGPA becomes |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA × 9.5 | CBSE (Class 10 and 12 CGPA) | 77.9% |
| (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | VTU and several technical universities | 74.5% |
| CGPA × 10 | Anna University and many others | 82% |
| CGPA ÷ scale × 100 | Simple proportion for any scale | 82% |
There’s no single national formula. Many universities print the formula on the back of the marksheet or publish it in their regulations, and that is the one employers and admissions offices expect you to use.
Worked examples
- CBSE CGPA 9.0 → 9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5%.
- VTU CGPA 7.5 → (7.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 67.5%.
- A 3.6 GPA on a 4-point scale → 3.6 ÷ 4 × 100 = 90% by simple proportion. Note that US universities usually don’t convert GPA to percentages this way; they look at your transcript.
Tips for applications
- Quote both the CGPA and the converted percentage, and name the formula.
- If your university gives an official conversion certificate, use that figure.
- For studying abroad, credential evaluators such as WES make their own conversion.
