How GPA is calculated
Each grade has a point value. Multiply it by the course credits to get quality points, then divide total quality points by total credits.
| Grade | A | A− | B+ | B | B− | C+ | C | C− | D+ | D | F |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Points | 4.0 | 3.7 | 3.3 | 3.0 | 2.7 | 2.3 | 2.0 | 1.7 | 1.3 | 1.0 | 0 |
Worked example
| Course | Grade | Credits | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Statistics | A− | 3 | 11.1 |
| Marketing Principles | B+ | 4 | 13.2 |
| Economics | B | 3 | 9.0 |
| Writing Seminar | A | 2 | 8.0 |
| Total | 12 | 41.3 |
Term GPA = 41.3 ÷ 12 = 3.44. If you already had 3.20 over 30 credits, your new cumulative GPA is (41.3 + 96) ÷ 42 = 3.27.
GPA for applications abroad
Scholarships and US universities often ask for a GPA even if your country uses another system. Many ask for a credential evaluation (for example from WES) rather than your own conversion, so check what each application wants. UK degree classes are often compared roughly as: First ≈ 3.7+, 2:1 ≈ 3.3–3.6, but conversions vary by evaluator. Check your English test score with the IELTS band calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good GPA?
On the 4.0 scale, 3.0 or higher is generally solid and 3.5 or higher is strong. Competitive scholarships often look for 3.5+.
Does an A+ count as 4.3?
At some universities, yes. This calculator uses 4.0 for A+, which is the most common practice. Check your institution’s scale.
How do I convert percentages to GPA?
There’s no universal formula. Use your university’s official conversion or a credential evaluation service.
