What a resignation letter should include

  1. A clear statement that you’re resigning, and your job title.
  2. Your last working day, based on your notice period.
  3. A short thank you (optional but recommended).
  4. An offer to help with the handover.

Keep it short and positive. You don’t have to give a reason, and the letter isn’t the place for complaints.

Example

Sam hands in notice on 5 November 2026 with a 4-week notice period, so the letter gives a last working day of 3 December 2026.

Notice periods

Check your contract for your notice period. In the UK, if your contract doesn’t say, the legal minimum an employee must give after one month in the job is one week. Your employer may agree to a shorter period, or ask you to take garden leave or use up holiday.

Frequently asked questions

How much notice do I need to give?

Whatever your contract says. In the UK, the legal minimum from an employee is one week after a month’s service if your contract doesn’t say.

Do I have to give a reason for resigning?

No. A short, positive letter without a reason is perfectly professional.

Can I resign by email?

Usually yes, unless your contract says otherwise. Keep a copy.

Can I take back my resignation?

Only if your employer agrees, so make sure before you send it.
