How WhatsApp links work
A WhatsApp link uses the format https://wa.me/ followed by your full international number, with no plus sign, spaces, brackets or leading zero. Adding ?text= pre-fills a message that the person can edit before sending.
| Country | Local number | Number in the link |
|---|---|---|
| UK (44) | 07700 900123 | 447700900123 |
| Pakistan (92) | 0300 1234567 | 923001234567 |
| India (91) | 98765 43210 | 919876543210 |
| UAE (971) | 050 123 4567 | 971501234567 |
| US (1) | (555) 123-4567 | 15551234567 |
Where to use your link
- Your Instagram, TikTok or Facebook bio.
- A “Chat on WhatsApp” button on your website.
- Email signatures and Google Business Profile.
- The QR code on flyers, menus, shop windows and business cards.
Example
A UK bakery with the number 07700 900123 and the message “Hi, I’d like to order a cake” gets: https://wa.me/447700900123?text=Hi%2C%20I'd%20like%20to%20order%20a%20cake
Tip: a WhatsApp Business account lets you add a short link and automatic greeting, but these links work with both personal and business accounts.
