How TikTok engagement rate is calculated

Engagement rate by views = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100.

Engagement rate by followers = average engagements per video ÷ followers × 100.

Because most TikTok views come from the For You feed rather than followers, the rate by views is the fairer way to compare videos and accounts. The rate by followers can go over 100% when a video goes viral.

Example

A video with 25,000 views, 900 likes, 60 comments, 45 shares and 95 saves has 1,100 engagements, an engagement rate of 4.4% by views.

What’s a good TikTok engagement rate?

Socialinsider’s analysis of millions of brand videos puts the average engagement rate by views at roughly 4%, with smaller accounts tending to score slightly higher. As a rough guide:

Engagement rate by views Rating
Under 2% Below average
2% to 4% Around average
4% to 8% Above average
Over 8% Excellent

Creators often get higher rates than brands, and rates vary by niche, so compare yourself with similar accounts.
