How similarity is measured

Both texts are broken into overlapping four-word phrases. Similarity is the share of phrases the two texts have in common. Short phrases like “the” or “and the” don’t count, so reordering a few words won’t hide copying, but genuine rewriting will lower the score.

Score Meaning
Under 25% Mostly unique
25% to 60% Partly duplicate: some shared passages
Over 60% Mostly duplicate

Does duplicate content hurt SEO?

Google doesn’t penalise duplicate content in general. But when pages are near-identical, it picks one to show and filters the others, so your pages can end up competing with each other or with other sites using the same supplier text.
