Worked examples

These profiles are made up to show how the points add up.

1. A 30-year-old engineer applying from overseas

Bachelor’s degree (15), proficient English (10), 4 years’ experience abroad (5), age 30 (30) and single (10) gives 70. That passes 65, but popular occupations often need more to be invited. Moving to superior English would add 10 more, taking the profile to 80.

2. A former international student in Australia

Age 27 (30), an Australian master’s by coursework (15), the Australian study requirement (5), a Professional Year in ICT (5), proficient English (10), 1 year of Australian work (5) and single (10) gives 80 for a 189. With a 491 regional nomination it would be 95.

3. Turning 33 costs 5 points

Age points fall from 30 to 25 on your 33rd birthday, and to 15 at 40. Points are counted when you’re invited, not when you submit your expression of interest, so a profile close to a birthday can lose points while waiting.
