How it adds up
Cost per day = cigarettes a day ÷ cigarettes in a pack × price of a pack. A small daily habit soon becomes a big yearly number.
| Daily habit (£16 a pack of 20) | A week | A year | 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 a day | £28 | £1,460 | £14,610 |
| 10 a day | £56 | £2,920 | £29,220 |
| 15 a day | £84 | £4,380 | £43,830 |
| 20 a day | £112 | £5,840 | £58,440 |
Example
Smoking 15 a day at £16 a pack costs £84 a week and £4,380 a year. Someone who quit 30 days ago has already saved about £360 and avoided 450 cigarettes.
What happens when you stop
- After 48 hours, carbon monoxide has left your body and taste and smell start to improve.
- Within a few weeks to months, breathing and circulation get better.
- Over the years, your risk of heart disease, stroke and lung cancer falls substantially.
