How your score is worked out
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a “word” is any 5 characters, including spaces. Gross WPM counts everything you typed; net WPM, your main score, takes off one word for each mistake.
What’s a good typing speed?
| WPM | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 25 | Beginner, often hunt-and-peck |
| 25–40 | Average for adults |
| 40–60 | Above average, good for most office jobs |
| 60–80 | Fast, typical of experienced touch typists |
| 80+ | Very fast |
Many admin and data-entry jobs ask for 40 to 60 WPM with high accuracy.
How to type faster
- Learn touch typing: keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;).
- Don’t look at the keyboard, even if you’re slower at first.
- Aim for 95% accuracy before trying to speed up.
- Practise 10 minutes a day rather than an hour once a week.
