The formula

Engagement rate by followers = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ number of posts ÷ followers × 100.

Engagement rate by reach uses average reach instead of followers. It’s more accurate, because most followers don’t see every post, and it’s the figure many brands now ask for.

Worked example

An account with 12,000 followers gets 3,600 likes and 180 comments across its last 10 posts. That’s 378 interactions per post, or 3.15% of followers.

What’s a good rate?

There’s no official benchmark, and figures vary by industry and by study. As a rough guide used in this calculator: below 1% is low, 1% to 3% is typical, 3% to 6% is strong and above 6% is excellent. Smaller accounts usually have higher rates than large ones.

How many posts should I include?

Your last 10 to 12 regular posts. Leave out giveaways and paid posts, which can skew the result.
