Worked examples

Single, $85,000

Taxable income is $85,000 − $16,100 = $68,900. Tax is $1,240 (10%) + $4,560 (12%) + $4,070 (22% of $18,500) = $9,870. That’s the 22% bracket, but an effective rate of only 11.6%.

Income and status Federal tax Bracket
$50,000 single $3,820 12%
$85,000 single $9,870 22%
$150,000 married jointly $15,340 22%
$250,000 single $51,304 32%

Being in a higher bracket only means the income above that threshold is taxed at the higher rate. A raise never reduces your take-home pay because of the brackets.
