The required amount

For student visas, Germany requires proof of €992 a month, or €11,904 for 12 months, the amount set from the 2024/25 winter semester and still in force for 2026. Each month, €992 is released to your German bank account to cover living costs.

Other visa types can differ. Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) applicants currently need about €1,091 a month.

Worked examples

A standard 12-month deposit

12 × €992 = €11,904, plus a provider’s set-up fee and a small buffer, usually around €100 to €150 in total, so about €12,050.

With a partial scholarship

A student with a €400-a-month scholarship only needs to show the remaining €592 a month: 12 × €592 = €7,104. Embassies want the scholarship letter as evidence.
