How to take a photo that gets accepted
- Stand in front of a plain, light background. A white or light grey wall with no shadows works best. This tool doesn’t remove backgrounds, so get it right in the original.
- Use even light from the front. Face a window in daylight, and avoid overhead lights that cast shadows under your eyes and chin.
- Ask someone else to take it from about 1.5 metres away at eye level. Selfies distort faces and are often rejected.
- Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and visible. Take off glasses for most countries, including the UK and US.
- Upload it here, drag your face into the oval and zoom until your chin and the top of your head touch the red lines.

Rules change and some applications have extra requirements, so check the official guidance for your document before you print.
Printing your photos
The print sheet is a 6×4 inch (10×15 cm) image at 300 dpi, the standard size at supermarket and pharmacy photo kiosks. Print it at “actual size” with no borders or cropping, then cut along the grey lines. Printed at home, use glossy photo paper and check one photo with a ruler first.
Example: a UK passport renewal online
Online UK passport applications need a digital photo, not a printed one, at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall. The single photo from this tool is 826 × 1062 pixels, so it meets that as long as your original is reasonably sharp. Start from a full-resolution phone photo, not a screenshot or a picture sent through a messaging app, which are often compressed.
Example: a Schengen visa appointment
Visa centres usually want two printed 35 × 45 mm photos. Print the 6×4 sheet once and you’ll have six, enough for the appointment and spares if a form needs another.
Common reasons photos are rejected
- Shadows on the face or behind the head.
- Head too small or too large in the frame.
- A smile, open mouth, or eyes not looking at the camera.
- Hair covering the eyes or face, or a hat (unless worn for religious or medical reasons).
- Photos that are edited, filtered or older than one month.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a UK passport photo?
35 mm wide by 45 mm high, with the head (chin to crown) between 29 mm and 34 mm tall.
What size is a US passport photo?
2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head between 1 and 1⅜ inches from chin to top of head.
Can I print passport photos at home?
Yes, if you print at actual size on photo paper with a good printer. Many people print the 6×4 sheet at a supermarket kiosk instead, which is cheap and consistent.
Does this tool upload my photo?
No. The photo is processed in your browser and never sent to a server.
Can it change my background to white?
Not yet. Take the photo against a plain, light background so it doesn’t need changing.
